I have passed Mango a few times, when walking to the West End and I recently saw a voucher deal for here (two burgers and a cocktail for £12) which I had to get as it was a very good deal.

On entering we were greeted and shown to our table, and had a look about and at the menu.

For me this place had a really good atmosphere about it, you had Latin American music playing in the background, everyone was having a nice time, you had a TV that was showing football and WWE.

One part that was very cool was at every both, there was a plug socket on the wall. This had normal plug points and a USB point which was a nice touch.

The Food :

Beef Burrito £n/a as had voucher (normally £8.90)
Wheat flour tortilla wrapped with meat, refried beans, lettuce, guacamole, cheese and sour cream.

IMG_7994.jpg

I have had a few Burritos in the last few months, so I thought I would try one from here. On arrived it looked very nice, and it smelled really good.

At first bite I was a little puzzled as I was expecting it to have rice inside, but I am guessing not all Burritos need to have this.

Overall this was just OK for me, there were a few very chewy bits of beef but the majority were all nice and tender and the flavour was nice. The dips really did add to the flavour, my favourite was the sour cream I felt this worked very well with this.

Cocktail :

Mango Mojito £n/a as had voucher

The waitress who was very helpful tonight told me about the 3 cocktails I could choose from, so I told her I had a sweet tooth and to surprise me and she brought this one.

So I was with my friend tonight and there were two items on the dessert list that caught our eye, so we decided to order both and try half of each.

Desserts :

Churros con Chocolate £4.50
Very Latin American sweet snack to dip in to hot chocolate

IMG_8001.jpg

I wanted something sweet tonight, and this is a very sweet dessert.

I have had this before in many restaurants and loved it, and tonight I enjoyed it and with the dip it made it that extra sweet that I needed.

Torta de Queijo con Mango £4.50
Fresh Home Baked Mango cheesecake

This was very nicely presented, and I couldn’t wait to dig in.

It was a very nice cheesecake, with a very nice Mango sauce.

Overall :

Overall I really enjoyed my first visit here, food wise for me it was nice but atmosphere and cocktails that’s where it won for me.

I would like to go back and try another dish, and more of the cocktails.

As I said at the start of this post, I really felt relaxed and really enjoyed the atmosphere here. The music was at a perfect level, and the service, decor etc were all very good.

Event Date : Wednesday 14th December 2016

I was recently lucky to be invited to Glasgows new restaurants, I had seen a lot of promotion for Revolution de Cuba on Facebook and Twitter so I was looking forward to trying it and now with this invite I get to see it first.

When I got invited I was asked for my address so they could send the personal invite out, I had forgotten about this till I came home from work and saw I had a small package. My first thought was “what have I ordered on Amazon” and then I opened it.

This was the invite, a biscuit! This for me this was a really nice touch and a tasty touch. Going by what I have read and heard from other bloggers, I have never heard of a biscuit invite. As you can see its very detailed, and very cool looking….its was gone that day 🙂

Event Details :

The invite mentioned

  • Cocktails
  • Canapés
  • Christmas gift making from the development chef
  • Rum club

To me this sounded like a nicely planned evening.

The Pre Launch night :

I am the type of person that always prefers to be early, than leave last minute and be late. I was the first to arrive, so this gave me a perfect opportunity to take a look about and take some photos.

I was welcomed and shown to a long table, where the night would start. I was then brought a welcome cocktail, and this was very nice I could have had a second.

img_4118

Slowly more people started to turn up and sit next to me, I finally got to meet Amy from Amy’s Food Blog @_Dont_Byrne_It_ just like our chats via Twitter Amy is a lovely girl and I look forward to meeting her again. At the table we all introduced ourself and added on Twitter/Instagram etc. and followed back.

The staff then brought over some table nibbles, and all of it was very nice and went down a treat.

Half way through the nibbles, our table was asked to go over to another one for the gift making part.

Gift Making :

On arrival at the table we had a small jar in front of us, and there were several containers with different things inside them….we were soon to learn what each container held.

img_4068

Each container held different spices that when combined made a really nice rub to put on meat.

img_4067

This was interesting and fun to mix the spices, and another nice little touch allowing us to take a little of tonight away with us.

Once everyone mixed their own spice, we then headed over to another area to do the Rum Club.

img_4084

The Rum Club :

Most of you that know me, or follow me on Twitter know I go to a monthly rum club so I was interested how this part would be.

The rums tonight were :

  • Kraken Black Spiced
  • Diplomatico (Reserva Exclusiva)
  • Wood’s Old Navy
  • El Dorado 12
  • Bacardi 8
  • Wray & Nephew

img_4094

Two members off staff were hosting this part, and let everyone have a small sample taste of each rum.

img_4090

This was a nice touch, and introduced different rums to the group i was with, for me I would have liked a little more detail about each rum but I think due to time constraints this was why it was just a little info.

Food Time :

This one the main part for me that I was looking forward to, as I like to try new places and new food styles.

We were all spoiled from start to finish, and even with the food. An empty table turned to a fully covered table.

I can’t fault any of the food that was served to us, everything was full of flavour and very nice.

I decided I HAD to try a cocktail from their list, to compare it and I spotted my favourite “Pornstar Martini”. This for me is my main favourite as I have had this drink many many times in 2016, so it was now time to try it here.

img_4105

The prosecco shot was fine, you cant really go wrong with this. Now for the martini, well….I was very disappointed. The flavours of this were very tangy and citrusy, unlike the other ones I have had that have been nice and smooth this wasn’t.

Previous ones have tasted like the old drink “Um Bongo”. For me this didn’t work, but for someone else it might depends what they like.

Overall :

Overall the event was a great success, everyone I spoke to loved it and had fun. We all made new friends, and enjoyed it from start to finish. Also would like to thank Valentina, our waitress as she was very pleasant and helpful.

The group of girls I got chatting to were all really lovely, I had a great time and due to the laughs and chats it made it extra special. I look forward to meeting them again in the future.

Will I go back? yes, if its anything like tonight then I look forward to going back and even being there when there is live music.

I would like to thank Revolution de Cuba for this invite, and for all the wonderful food and drinks tonight and I will see you soon again 🙂

Poco Havana Bar & Cantina Glasgow : Review

48a West Regent Street
G2 2RA Glasgow

0141 353 6098

Visit Date : 20th August 2016

Poco Havana is another new restaurant that opened in Glasgow in 2016, it’s opening was March the 18th and you can find more details about them on Facebook, their website and why not follow them on Twitter and Instagram.

I had been recommended by the staff at Obu Pan Asian, and via their twitter account to try here so I finally did.

There are several Latin American restaurants in Glasgow e.g. Topolabamba and Las Iguanas are two I have already tried. If you want my thoughts on them send me a tweet and I will let you know.

First Impressions :

Poco Havana is a very cosy little restaurant, and has a very unique theme compared to the other latin american restaurants in Glasgow that I have tried. There is themed music playing and unlike Topolabamba it’s not too loud where you need to shout over it and everyone else in the restaurant. Having to shout over music in places is a big no, it kills your enjoyment of the meal and who you are with but here the level was perfect.

It had just enough atmosphere which was good, and was very relaxing. The staff were all very friendly, and the waitress this night was very helpful.

The Food :

I am not a big Latin American food person, so this style of food is not something I have on a regular basis but I do enjoy it when I have it. Tonight I decided to try several small plates, so I could sample a few dishes and then the next time order one small and one large.

HUARACHAS CON CHORIZO: A CORN MASSA SANDAL WITH A SPICY MIX OF CHORIZO AND POTATO, FINISHED WITH FRESH AVOCADO, CREMA AND CORIANDER £4.95

1jbgmbnon47uabsh-oy2cag

This was very nice, everything about this just worked. It was a great portion size, and the flavours all complimented each other.

PRAWN AND AVOCADO TOSTADAS: PAN FRIED PRAWNS WITH GARLIC AND CHILLI, WITH A PINEAPPLE AND AVOCADO SALSA ON FRIED MINI CORN TORTILLAS £5.95

For me this was just ok, I really don’t know what I was expecting. The flavours for me were interesting and did work, but I don’t know if I would try this again. The prawns were warm whereas the rest of the plate was cold, so I don’t know if that was it or that it was missing something. Please don’t let this put you off trying it, as this is my opinion remember.

HOME MADE TORTILLA CHIPS AND GUACAMOLE: GUACAMOLE MADE FRESH TO ORDER, SERVED WITH OUR HOME MADE CORN TORTILLAS £4.50

This was a small plate, but wow its bigger than some of the other Latin American restaurants large plates. Out of all the tortilla chips I have tried, I really enjoyed this one the most and could have easily gone another plate but that would have just been too greedy after all the other ones.

Churros with rock salt and lemon sorbet. The churros were heavier and harder than expected as I have tried churros in many restaurants, but they were nice and the sorbet was really really good. I would have this again when I return.

Overall :

Overall for me this was a very good first time, the food, service etc all were very good and I had a nice time and nice meal. Would I go back? Yes, I would as Poco had for me the best parts of both Topolabamba and Las Iguanas, nice food, music just right level and good relaxing atmosphere.
