Ad Lib Glasgow (Merchant City) : Review

Visit DateĀ : 18 September 2016

First ImpressionsĀ :

I had been to Ad Lib (Merchant City) a good few years ago, and at that point I was just so so (food and service). I had heard recently that it had been done up, and was a lot better so I thought I would give it a second shot.

On arrival when my friend and I entered we were greeted and I told the member of staff I had a booking and my name. The staff member then pointed to a table over the far side and said ā€œhow about that oneā€, and turned away. Myself and my friend were left standing and wondering, are we going to be shown to the table or do we just head overā€¦.we just headed over. This is the first time for a very long time I have never been shown to a table in a restaurant.

The new improvements inside didnā€™t really stand out for me, I noticed that the bar area has moved, and in place some more seats. The tables used to be covered in comic book pages, now its just a wooden lookā€¦..and thats about it really.

We ordered our food, and then ordered drinks. The one issue again with service we had was when my friend ordered a second drink, we were told they didn’t have it left so he looked at the menu and turned the staff member and started saying ā€œI will haveā€¦ā€ and at that point the staff member then walked away to the next table and done something with them. Yes, they did come back and take my friends order for another drink, but that was a little rude.

The FoodĀ :

For the starter I ordered Southern Fried Chicken Popcorn with a dip.

I really enjoyed this, and the dip was really nice. I would happily order this again.

This is where things started to go down hill again for me, and also my friend.

Main :

For the second course we both decided to upgrade to their special burgers menu, and we both went for the same one a ā€œRingerā€ which is Angus Beef w/ Swiss Cheese, Pulled Pork & Onion Ring. This sounded really niceā€¦.

The burger was nicely presentedā€¦.

After about 3 bites I was actually getting bored eating it, the reason was the burger was a little dry and the flavours all blended so it wasn’t a great taste. The chips that came with it were nice, but they neededĀ a lotĀ of salt which is something I donā€™t tend to need to add to my orders.

I decided to go for the cheesecake of the day, the first member of staff I asked said it was double chocolate which sounded nice, then we got asked by another member of staff if we ordered and I said ā€œyes the cheesecake of the day which I was told was double chocolateā€ and they replied ā€œno its chocolate orangeā€. So I said ok and waited for my surprise to see what I got.

Well,ā€¦it arrived and yes the presentation again was nice. After a few bites, I found myself struggling to get any flavour from itā€¦it wasnā€™t chocolate orange and definitely wasnā€™t double chocolateā€¦so I am guessing it was just a hint of chocolate and no more.

OverallĀ :

Overall this dinner out for both of us was a big disappointment, the service was terrible, the food was just so so. For me this was my second time and last. I am sure others might have had a better experience, but this was now twice it has happened and am not going to make it a third.

Just in case it was a case of bad luck twice, please give it a try just in case you have a better experience than I do.

Bills Restaurant Glasgow : Review

22ā€“24 West Nile Street

Visit Date : 10 Sept 2016

First ImpressionsĀ :

So this was my second time in Bills, my first was not long after it opened. The first time was very disappointing as the whole experience was terrible, firstly we had to wait for a table even though we could see lots available and the time I spent in nobody occupied them.

This time I was met at the door and shown to a table right away, this experience was a lot more welcoming than the first time.

The FoodĀ :

The last time I ordered the burger to see how Billā€™s do theirā€™s, but I was very disappointed it was slightly cold, and had very little taste to it.

This time round I decided to try the buttered chicken burger, with added cheese and bacon.

The presentation was very good, and the waiting time from the order till on the table was a lot faster.

With one bite the taste was amazing, it was loaded with flavour and nice and tender. I don’t tend to order chicken burgers when I go out as I find them always to dry and not much flavour, but this this has changed my mind and I would order this again and again.

OverallĀ :

I was close to never going back to Billā€™s as my first experience was extremely poor, this time round it was a lot betterā€¦not perfect but a lot better and the food was really good.

Would I go back? Yes, I would and I would get this burger again.

Smoke Barbecue Glasgow Restaurant : Review

2 West Regent Street
Glasgow G2 1RW

Visit DateĀ : 3rd July 2016

I had heard about another restaurant called Smoke opening, and thought it was the same as Smoak just a second branch. This is a completely different one, plus the spelling is different.

Before going I took a look at the menu to see what I would have, and thought lets start safe and try a burger and maybe next visit try something else.

The new restaurant looks really nice from the outside, and on entering it did inside to. We were welcomed, and shown to our seat plus a the waiter put a small glass of popcorn on the table to nibble while we waited for our order.

We were told that they had ran out of burgers today, which was a dissapointment to me as thats what I wanted to try so I had to re-think what I wanted. I can only guess they had a really busy day, and everyone wanted a burger.

Main :

So I decided to have the Pulled Pork Pit Plate, with some Mac & Cheese as my side. When the plate arrived I really didn’t expect it to be as big as it was, I thought to myself I should be able to finish this but it won and I lost and have to leave some on my plate.

Overall the Pulled Pork Pit Plate was nice, but for me as it was so large I started to get bored of the taste close to the end which made me want to stop even more.

Dessert :

Even though I was very full, I had to force myself to try a Banoffee Pie to finish things up. It was nice, but I did have to force myself to finish it.

Overall my first impression of Smoke is very mixed, the food was nice, the service was good, but they didnā€™t have any burgers and I overheard no sausages left and due to this they lost several customers when I was in as they just walked out.

I felt the place was missing something, and am not sure if it was some sort of atmosphereā€¦.I just donā€™t know and cant put my finger on it. Would I go back? probably and I would try a burger if they had them in.
